Homebox
Record household item locations, photos, warranties, and maintenance information for retrieval.
About this project
Homebox manages household inventory by turning item information into searchable records. Items can have locations, labels, custom fields, photographs, purchase information, and related documents. A user creates a record, adds where the item is stored and its relevant attributes, then retrieves it through search. The resulting inventory can be maintained as household possessions and their details change.
One instance can hold separate collections for different households, groups, or locations. Hierarchical locations organize storage, reusable templates supply default fields, and QR codes provide quick item lookup. CSV import and export support bulk work, while a REST API connects other tools. These features operate around the recorded items and the relationships used to organize them.
The documentation offers Docker and direct host deployment, with SQLite or PostgreSQL for larger installations. Multi-user access allows collections to be shared, and OIDC integration connects an existing identity provider. Data storage, users, and authentication belong to the instance's configuration; connecting an external identity service depends on choosing and configuring that authentication route.
Why it is worth a look
- Organization by location, labels, and categories with item search in one application
- First-party usage or installation documentation is available
- A verifiable formal release record is available
Before you use it
- Use the currently maintained sysadminsmedia repository
- Self-hosting requires persistent data and authentication configuration
- Stable and release-candidate versions are separate; do not treat v0.27.0-rc.1 as stable
Choose hosting or Docker from the official README; Confirmed requirements: Command line, Docker, An always-on device or service; Some requirements have not been verified. Check the official setup instructions.
What it can do

- Custom fields
Who it fits
People who want to organize household items; Households recording warranty and purchase information
Unwilling to maintain a self-hosted service and not considering hosting providers; Only accepting a workflow without checking permissions and data backups
Getting started
