About this project

PairDrop offers device-to-device file and text transfers from modern browsers. Devices on a reachable local network can discover one another, while pairing and temporary public rooms support additional discovery arrangements.

The self-hosted service coordinates connections. Transfers use browser networking, and cross-network connections may need an external or self-operated TURN relay. This is a transfer workflow rather than persistent file storage or automatic folder synchronization.

The official hosting guide provides container images and describes required proxy headers. HTTPS enables additional browser features. The latest release is older than the latest observed commit, so operators should examine the slower release cadence when choosing a version.

Why it is worth a look

  • Browser file and text transfer
  • Local device discovery
02

Before you use it

  • Set proxy client-IP handling correctly
  • Plan HTTPS and optional TURN requirements
  • Review the age of the chosen release

  • Local device discovery
  • Device pairing
  • Temporary public rooms
  • PWA browser features

Who it fits

Good for

Users sharing ad hoc files between reachable devices; Households or small teams comfortable operating a small web service

Not a fit

You need continuous file synchronization; You require guaranteed connectivity across every network; You require rapid release cadence

Getting started

  1. Choose a local-only or cross-network deployment and prepare Docker or the documented Node.js environment.
  2. Run a documented PairDrop image and bind the service to the intended interface and port.
  3. Configure the reverse proxy to pass client IP information correctly and prevent direct access that bypasses it.
  4. Enable HTTPS for the relevant browser features; configure a TURN relay only when cross-network connectivity requires it and test both devices.
