PeaZip
A graphical tool combining compression, extraction, encryption and file verification.
About this project
PeaZip combines archive operations with a graphical file manager. Users can browse files, create archives, extract existing packages or convert between archive formats. Search, tabs and bookmarks help locate material. Tasks configured in the interface can also be exported as command line scripts, giving repeated archive operations another execution path alongside direct interaction with the graphical controls.
The application also provides checksums and hashing, duplicate file searches, and password or keyfile settings for formats that support them. It brings together several compression tools behind the interface, where jobs are configured and launched. File organization and archive processing can therefore be arranged from the same application while using the relevant compression backend for the chosen format.
PeaZip has Windows, Linux and macOS versions as well as portable distributions. Format support distinguishes creating archives from reading them: supported output includes 7Z, ZIP and TAR, while extraction covers additional formats. RAR extraction is built in, but creating RAR archives requires an external WinRAR installation. These are separate capabilities even though both concern the same archive family.
Why it is worth a look
- Create and extract multiple archive formats
- Archive encryption and file hash verification
Before you use it
- The current project website and repository use LGPLv3; the old candidate sheet's BSD assessment must not be carried forward
- Creating RAR requires additional WinRAR software; extracting RAR does not imply direct RAR creation
- The project says packages are unsigned but provides SHA256; check download provenance
Use an officially listed operating system and architecture; Have application installation permissions and sufficient local storage; Some requirements have not been verified. Check the official setup instructions.
What it can do
- Create and extract multiple archive formats
- Archive encryption and file hash verification
- Installed and portable versions
Who it fits
Everyday compression, extraction and file integrity checks
Judgment: Users requiring direct free RAR creation or platform-signed releases
Getting started
- Choose the platform's installer or portable version on the official website
- Check the official hash as needed, then install or extract and run
- Test compression and extraction with file copies and confirm the output directory
