FreshRSS is a self-hosted feed aggregator for collecting and reading website updates. It supports multiple users, anonymous reading, and custom article tags. Browser access provides the reading interface, while APIs and command-line functionality offer additional ways to interact with an installation. Subscriptions and reading activity are maintained within the instance operated by the user or administrator.
WebSub can deliver pushed updates, while XPath and JSON extraction rules can collect content from sites without conventional feeds. Selected articles can be shared through web pages or feed formats. Extensions add further behavior. Standard feed subscriptions and rule-based extraction are separate collection methods, with the latter depending on configuration appropriate to the source site's structure.
Deployment requires a web server, PHP, and a supported database such as SQLite, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or MySQL. The repository instructs operators to expose only the public directory, keeping personal data directories outside that entry point. It also distinguishes stable releases from the rolling edge branch, so installation and update instructions should match the selected channel.
