Joplin organizes notes and to-do items into notebooks. Notes use Markdown and can be tagged, searched, copied, and edited, including through an external text editor. Its offline-first design keeps data on the phone or computer, allowing existing notes to remain accessible without an internet connection. The notebook collection is the central working space.
Content can be written directly or imported from Markdown files and Evernote exports. Evernote imports include attachments and metadata, while formatted text is converted to Markdown. A browser clipper for Chrome and Firefox captures pages and screenshots. Full-text search retrieves material, and plugins and themes provide additional ways to adapt the editing environment. Both capture routes retain reusable material.
Clients are available for Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS. For multiple devices, Joplin supports synchronization targets including Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Joplin Cloud, with end-to-end encryption support. Local note storage and the selected remote synchronization service are distinct parts of this arrangement; the chosen synchronization path must be configured on the devices.
