Karakeep, previously called Hoarder, is a self-hosted collection tool for links, notes, pictures, and PDFs. Saved links can acquire titles, descriptions, and preview images. Lists and search organize the resulting collection, and lists can also support collaboration. The application brings several kinds of collected material together rather than restricting records to a browser's folder of URLs.
Browser extensions, mobile applications, RSS, and an API provide collection routes. Reading tools include highlights, while image OCR and a rules engine support content processing. Full-page archiving is also available, with some archival behavior requiring explicit enablement. Automatic tags and summaries are AI-related capabilities that can be configured separately from basic saving and organizing.
The Docker Compose guide covers service connections, secrets, and persistent storage. AI tagging is optional: deployments can use an OpenAI API key or another provider such as local Ollama. External API usage introduces its own credentials and charges. Images can follow the stable release tag or be pinned to a version to control upgrades.
The official Karakeep Cloud offers the lowest-friction starting path; Confirmed requirements: Command line, Docker, An always-on device or service; Some requirements have not been verified. Check the official setup instructions.
