Zotero manages research sources and bibliographic references. Books, articles, reports, and webpages become items containing authors, titles, dates, and other metadata. Items can carry files, notes, and links. A single item can belong to multiple collections, much like a track in several playlists, without creating a separate record for every research topic.
The browser Connector recognizes source information, creates records, and downloads available PDFs. Identifiers such as DOI and ISBN provide another import route. Tags, full-text searching, and saved searches organize the library. Integrations with Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs insert citations, generate bibliographies, and switch citation styles across a document as writing progresses. Citations can follow different publication styles.
Library items and notes synchronize through Zotero servers; attachment synchronization can use Zotero storage or a WebDAV service. Group libraries support collaborative research through clients and the website. When a webpage has no specialized translator, capture may produce a basic webpage item and snapshot instead. Additional metadata can still require manual completion and checking.
